Joaquin Clerch was born in La Havana, Cuba in 1965. He started studying the guitar with Leopoldina Nunez and then continued at the National School of Arts and at the Instituo superior de Arte. His teachers were Marta Cuervo, Antonio Rodriguez, Rey Guerra, Costas Cotsiolis, Leo Brouwer. He also studied composition with Carlos Farinas.

In 1990 he came to study in Salzbourg with Mozarteum´s stipendium where he studied guitar with Eliot Fisk, the ancient music with Nikolaus Harnocourt and Anthony Spiri and contemporary music with Oswald Sallaberger.
