Roberto Aussel's Biography

Roberto Aussel was born in 1954 in La Plata, Argentina. He received his musical education at the age of seven studying guitar. His main guitar teacher was Jorge Martinez Zarate. He has won the first prize in numerous competitions around the world. Among the most important, International Guitar Festival Radio France, Guitar Festival Porto Alegre(Brazil), and Alirio Diaz de Caracas in Venezuela.

His notoriety as an international performer has grown considerably since then captivating audiences, notably the ones not entirely familiar with the guitar. Aussel is characterized by extreme care in phrasing which highlights the intentions of the composer and the subtle effects of the expression. The ease to identify the original intentions of the composer has always highlighted him as an exceptional guitarist.

Roberto Aussel doesn’t limit himself to the standard guitar music. The diversity of his repertoire is impressive, ranging from baroque to contemporary music. Deeply concerned by the music of the 20th century, he worked with several composers, and many of them have dedicated works to him. He has also premiered numerous works and through his recordings new works and composers have been revealed to the public less familiar with the guitar. In 1981, Astor Piazzolla devoted him his first composition for guitar.

Roberto Aussell was head of the Henry Lemoine Publishing Company for guitar since 1983. In 1999, the Foundation Konex de Buenos Aires (Argentina) awarded him the Konex "Platinum", which categorized him as the best plucked string instrumentalist for the past decade.

Roberto Aussel currently resides in Cologne, Germany where he is professor at the Musikhochschule and enjoys a very active performing career which takes him around the globe every year.
